November 13, 2008 – 8:18 am

How to Dress for Winter Weather:

  • Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing  rather than one layer of heavy clothing.
  • Make sure outer garments are tightly woven and water-repellent.
  • Wear mittens (they keep your hands warmer than gloves).
  • Wear a hat.
  • Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your face and lungs from extremely cold air.
  • Wear sturdy, waterproof boots in snow/ice conditions.

Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

You can avoid many dangerous winter travel problems by planning ahead.  Have your vehicle serviced as often as the manufacturer recommends.

To winterize your vehicle, pay attention to the following:

  • Batteryand ignition system should be in top condition and battery terminals clean.
If your vehicle’s battery is more than four (4) years old it should be replaced.
  • Check your vehicle’s tire tread - replace tires as needed. Also don’t forget to check your tire’s air pressure including the spare tire.
  • Ensure antifreeze levels are sufficient to avoid freezing to minus 34 F.
  • Ensure the heater and defroster are working properly.
  • Check and repair windshield wiper equipment; ensure proper washer fluid level.
  • Check headlights, brake, tail and flashing hazard lights for proper operation.
  • Check for leaks and crimped pipes in the exhaust system; repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning.
  • Check brakes for wear and fluid level.
  • Check oil for proper level and weight. Heavier weight oils thicken more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well.
  • Replace fuel and air filters. Keep water out of the fuel system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas.
  • Inspect the belts and hoses. Cold temperatures can accelerate the demise of a belt or hose.
  • If your vehicle has a  four-wheel drive system, make it is working properly.
  • Don’t forget to keep a snowbrush/ice scraper in your vehicle!
