Eye & Firework Safety Awareness Month - June
June 18, 2008 – 10:17 amI find it very interesting that both Eye & Firework Safety Awareness Months fall in June, but I think I understand why.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 9,200 firework-related injuries were treated in 2006.
- 46% of the injuries were to the head.
- 24% of those injuries were to the eyes.
- 90% off all reported incidences in 2006 were caused by legal fireworks.
I was very surprised by those stats. I assumed that most accidents were caused by illegal fireworks.
The National Council on Fireworks Safety urges people to follow the rules below to ensure the safety of everyone when using fireworks:
- Only use fireworks outdoors.
- Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
- Children under 16 should only use fireworks with adult supervision.
- Always have a bucket of water or water hose nearby.
- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
- Parents should pay special attention to children using sparklers. Sparklers reach temperatures up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Children should not touch the lit portion of the sparklers, throw them, or play games with them. Sparklers can be dangerous if used improperly.

You are not alone to be surprised by the number of fireworks injuries that are caused by products that are legally avaialable. While the NSC and others offer safe tips on the use of fireworks, NFPA believes there is no safe way to use consumer fireworks. Check out a couple new PSA’s on the dangers of consumer fireworks at www.nfpa.org\fireworks.
Have a safe holiday.
