Practice Fun
May 21, 2008 – 9:22 amDo you remember the terrified feeling you had as a child when your mom said it was time to visit the doctor? Many kids – and even adults – still get anxious and nervous when preparing for a trip to the doctor’s or dentist’s office. The official term is latrophobia. It could date back to one bad experience or a lifetime of uneasy and unfriendly visits. It’s your job as a practice to make your office inviting and take some of the fear out of seeing the doctor.
One way to make things a little less intimidating is to use humor to “inject” some fun into your practice – and I’m not just talking about for pediatric practices. Fun wall art, friendly scrubs, even a humorous reminder card can help contribute to an environment that seems less sterile. Celebrate staff birthdays and share treats with patients, decorate for holidays in your office, choose seasonally-themed communications, create a newsletter that incorporates some brain teasers or mind benders. These are just a few of the ways you can make your practice friendlier.
Certainly, there is a great deal to be said about maintaining a professional environment, but look around you for opportunities to project your practice in a fun and unique way. It will set you apart and, who knows, you may even help a patient or two overcome their latrophobia.
