Beating Germs

Hand washing is the most effective way to avoid spreading germs, so keep antibacterial soap readily available for clients and staff to use.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released the report Guideline for Hand Hygiene in Health-Care Settings in 2002.  The report recommends a generous dose of handwashing with soap and water and states that alcohol-based hand rubs also significantly reduce hand-borne bacteria when used correctly.  According to the guidelines, apply the alcohol-based rub on the palm of one hand, then rub to cover all surfaces of the hands and fingers until the hands are dry.  Gloves also limit the spread of germs but do not replace the need for handwashing before and after each appointment.

In a perfect world, we could eliminate all bad bacteria.  However, the fact remains that germs are everywhere; they cannot be avoided.  All we can do is minimize disease-causing bacteria to try to create a healthier environment for clients and staff.
